Richmond's rugby stars shine at provincials

The city was well represented in both girls and boys divisions, as nine players from Richmond took part in the games.

Several Richmond athletes took part in the “PRCs” – the BC Rugby Provincial Championships - over the July long weekend at UBC.

The PRCs are a major competition that features athletes from around the province representing their sub-regions in 15-a-side rugby tournament that serves as a pathway to provincial team selection.

The city was well represented in both girls and boys divisions, as nine players from Richmond took part in the games.

Prop Malcolm Denning (McMath) helped guide his U-18 Vancouver South team to a silver medal, while Mathew Barton (McMath) was an integral part of the U-16 Vancouver South boys’ team which also won silver at the tournament.

Jonathan Newman (McRoberts) and Angelo Xiang (McRoberts) anchored a powerful Vancouver West scrum at the U-16 level, and were unlucky to finish outside of the podium, losing in the bronze medal game to Fraser Valley West.

Ayana Titifanua (Boyd) guided the Vancouver South U-16 team with her kicking skills and Marley Sanday (Palmer) lead the team in scoring with three tries to help the girls side to a fourth place finish at the tournament.

Annie Begg (McRoberts), Rayya Kumar (McRoberts) and Claire Campbell (McRoberts) were important members of the Vancouver South U-18 girls’ team which finished sixth at the tournament.

Kumar (University of Calgary) and Begg (University of Alberta) will be continuing their rugby careers at the post-secondary level next fall.
