Ten charities in Richmond, which serve the most vulnerable in the city, have benefited from the 9th Annual Rose’s Angels event.
During February and March, donations poured in from family and friends of the organizers, as well as from the wider community.
Around 200 people are understood to have benefited from the drive, including those connected to organizations such as Richmond Family Place, Pathways Clubhouse, Richmond Food Bank, Chimo Society-Nova House and Tikvah Housing Society.
Rose’s Angels has been a large community event since 2012, donating more than 6,000 care packages, to date, in honour of Rose Lewin and Babs Cohen, Courtney Cohen’s grandmothers.
Cohen, co-founder of Rose’s Angels, and Lynne Fader, co-executive director of the Kehila Society Of Richmond, established their “passion project” together.
With the cost of living soaring and many families struggling to make ends meet, Cohen and Fader decided to move this year’s individual care packages to primarily gift card donations to local grocery/drug stores.
“Receiving a gift card allows an individual to go independently and purchase what they require when they need it most,” Cohen told the Richmond News.
“Our goal is to bring back our large care package event for 2023 if our community safety guidelines allow for it.
“We received a wonderful outpouring of donations from our family, friends and community members this year. The Rose’s Angels event would not be possible without the support of the Kehila Society of Richmond, our family and friends, community volunteers and donors.”
