A Richmond youth is calling on other young people from around the world to let their voices be heard through art.
Richmondite Yoshier Hu is the vice president of Youth Initiative Vancouver - a not-for-profit dedicated to empowering youth.
Her organization is hosting the Canada Youth Visual Art Contest, an annual contest that not only gives student artists an opportunity to win money and have their work shown, but also raises funds for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
The Grand Prize winner will be awarded $500, and the top works will be shown at Richmond’s Lipoint Gallery on No. 3 Road this summer. All submissions must be in by April 30. To date, Hu said her organization has received 1,200 works from 20 different countries and regions.
“It’s great to see students of different ages share their talents through this platform, and we can also donate quite a bit of money to the charity,” said Hu.
Students, between ages five and 23, are asked to create art on the themes of either “climate change” or “love and care,” said Hu.
Candidates will be broken into different categories based on their age.
There are no restrictions on the materials used to create the submissions.
The registration fee is $30 per entry, with $10 of each entry being donated directly to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation. Last year, the contest has raised $14,000 for (UNICEF).
