A Richmond resident was the victim of mail theft while isolating at home with COVID-19.
Richmond fiction writer Yilin Wang caught COVID-19 in mid-January. She was confined to her home for two weeks, and, during this time, was waiting for COVID-19 tests to arrive in the mail.
However, she never received them despite a notice from Canada Post saying her packages had already been delivered.
Not only were the packages with the COVID-19 tests stolen, Wang said, many other items have gone missing over the past few months, such as work packages and personal documents that could result in her identity being stolen.
This doesn’t appear to be an isolated incident as Wang said she’s heard about multiple residents in the building being victims of mail theft.
Many have received notices that their packages were delivered to the building’s locked mailboxes, but when they went to retrieve them, they weren’t there, Wang said.
“It’s like completely being broken-into or something,” said Wang, who felt frustrated with the whole situation.
Wang contacted the Richmond RCMP and reached out to the Canada Post for help.
Canada Post told her, however, the strata management company was responsible for security to prevent mail theft.
Meanwhile, the management company has been slow to respond to her concerns, she explained.
“Too many packages (got stolen). The management company didn’t bother to ask,” added Wang.
She contacted the Richmond RCMP twice and the police suggested her to contact the strata management company to check the availability of video footage.
The Richmond News has reached out to the RCMP for more details.
