Richmond volunteers needed to pull invasive blackberries at Terra Nova

The Lower Mainland Green Team is partnering with the City of Richmond to prepare a site for tree planting.

A group of volunteers plan to root out some invasive Himalayan blackberries at Terra Nova Park this weekend and they’re inviting Richmond residents to come and help.

The Lower Mainland Green Team is partnering with the City of Richmond this Saturday to clear blackberry brambles in the west Richmond park in preparation for tree planting in the area.

Organizers say no experience is necessary and people of all ages, abilities and experience levels are welcome to come help.

Ashton Kerr with the Lower Mainland Green Team noted the event is a “great opportunity for people to try something new, get exercise outdoors, meet new people and make a positive impact on the environment.”

“Spending time in nature is excellent for our mental and physical health, so come on out to de-stress and have some fun,” she added.

Instructions, tools, gloves, safety supplies and refreshments will all be provided, in addition to a thank you gift for participants provided by a sustainable business.

The event runs from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We need lots of help to clear all the roots from this site to give the trees the best chance of survival,” Kerr said.
