A Richmond-based seafood wholesale company is recalling a brand of oysters from the marketplace due to the possible norovirus contamination.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning consumers that Union Bay Seafood Ltd. brand Pacific oysters is being pulled from the market.

CFIA said the recalled items, Chef Creek Xs and Royal Miyagi xsm Pacific oysters, have been sold in B.C. and may have been distributed in other provinces and territories.

The CFIA added that there have been reported illnesses associated with the consumption of the oysters.

This is the second recall of B.C. oysters in recent weeks. On March 20, Stellar Bay Shellfish brand is being pulled from the marketplace.

What you should do

- If you think you have become ill from consuming a recalled product, call your doctor.

- Check to see if you have the recalled products in your home or establishment.

- Do not consume the recalled products.

- Do not serve, use, sell, or distribute the recalled products.

- Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the location where they were purchased.

- Consumers who are unsure if they have purchased the affected products are advised to contact their retailer.

The federal government also notes that people with norovirus illness usually develop symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps within 24 to 48 hours of being infected, and people who are ill should drink plenty of liquids to replace lost body fluids and prevent dehydration.
