Richmond RCMP target shoplifters making 15 arrests

Shoplifting complaints increased in recent months, says police.

Richmond RCMP's latest operation to catch shoplifters has resulted in 15 arrests, making the total 40 this year.

Police made 15 arrests during the Dec. 15 Operation Boost and Bust, with most being for theft under $5,000.

Around $1,000-worth of merchandise from a business was recovered during one of the arrests.

Insp. Michael Cohee of Richmond RCMP said police are combating retail thefts through such initiatives in recognition of the "personal and financial impacts" on local businesses.

"Unfortunately, we have seen an increase in the number of shoplifting complaints received from our business community in recent months," he said.

Last month, the operation resulted in 18 arrests of 15 adults and three youth.

Apart from Operation Boost and Bust, Richmond RCMP also works with community partners and loss prevention officers to identify theft patterns and trends.

According to Richmond RCMP, extra enforcement will be conducted during the holiday season including bike patrols.
