New Japanese snack vending machines at three Metro Vancouver SkyTrain stations

Here's where to find Japanese snacks and drinks on the go.

New vending machines selling Japanese snacks have popped up at three SkyTrain stations in Metro Vancouver.

Snackyo is the newest business selling imported Japanese treats through vending machines at TransLink's Capstan, Metrotown, and Olympic Village stations.

Jocelyn Ng, a Vancouver resident and Snackyo owner, said Japan's vending machine culture has always stood out to her, and she wanted to bring that experience to Vancouver.

In Japan, vending machines often anything from food and hot drinks to toys and miscellaneous items. But Ng decided on curated Japanese snacks as a starting point.

"I've always loved Japanese snacks myself, so every snack that goes into the machine is chosen and taste-tested by me," said Ng, adding she also offers mystery snack boxes through her business.

"I want to share what I actually think is delicious and have them easily accessible for people commuting."

Currently, Snackyo's machines are stocked with Pocky, chocolates, crunchy crackers, specialty gummies and drinks, all imported from Japan.

Ng told the Richmond News she is working on bringing in smart vending machines. These are internet-connected automated retail systems that uses sensors, touchscreens and even AI technology.

"There are many requirements like power, safety and regulations from TransLink, so we are still figuring that out right now," she explained.

Ng said her vending machine business would not have been possible without the support of local community members and suppliers.

"I'm really fortunate to receive help from kindhearted people and some Hong Kong people here who supported me financially," she said.

While there are only three machines at the moment, Snackyo hopes to expand to more transit stations and other easy-to-access spots in local communities.
