Police have issued footage of a man suspected of stealing a car after its driver gave him a ride into the centre of Richmond

Richmond Mounties are on the lookout for a man who stole a car, after its driver gave the suspect a ride into the city centre.

Just after 1 a.m. on Monday, April 3, the 28-year-old victim left a business in the 8800 block of River Road, near the Oak Street Bridge, when the suspect approached him and began talking to him.

Shortly afterwards, the suspect asked for a ride into downtown Richmond, to which the driver agreed and drove him to the area of No. 3 and Cambie roads.

However, according to the victim, this is where the suspect threatened the driver, ordered him out of the vehicle – a black, 2016 Kia Optima with Alberta licence plates - and drove off.

Richmond RCMP are asking the public to take a look at the CCTV footage released, paying particular attention to the suspect’s black, “peacoat” woolen jacket.

The suspect is described as Caucasian, 20-30-years-old, about six-feet, one-inch tall, weighing 200 pounds and was of medium build.

“By releasing this security footage, we hope that someone will recognize this suspect by his distinctive attire and grooming,” said Richmond RCMP’s Cpl. Dennis Hwang.

“Please contact us if it does. Your information may help us bring him to justice.”

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to contact Const. Sonny Virk of the Richmond RCMP at 604-278-1212, by email at [email protected] or anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
