Richmond group celebrate Canada Day by picking up trash

Some Richmondites chose to celebrate Canada Day in another way.

While some Canadians celebrated Canada Day drinking on a patio or having a backyard barbecue, others were out picking up trash.

“It has been a significant and beautiful event with many pedestrians stopping by and saying thank you to us. Some volunteers even took their whole families to participate in the clean-up. You can see young children and elders helping each other,” said Shelley Kuo, a long-time member of the Tzu Chi Foundation.

Cleaning up the neighourhood on Canada Day has been a long-standing tradition for the charitable group. However, this was the first time they took tongs and garbage bags to the public streets -- they usual clean up local parks.

To say “Happy Birthday” this July 1, the volunteers decided to pick up cans and cigarette butts from around Lansdowne and Brighouse Canada Line stations.

Another participant Mingfeng Hong said it was nice to get outside for a walk while picking up some trash at the same time.

“The most fun part is making friends through this event,” said Hong.

The Tzu Chi Foundation is a Taiwan-headquartered charity and humanitarian organization.
