It looks like the COVID-19 fourth wave has hit Richmond as the number of cases continues to climb weekly.

Ninety-one new COVID-19 cases were found in Richmond in the last weekly reporting period (Aug. 24-30) and eight people were in Richmond Hospital with the virus as of Tuesday.

In mid-July there were just 13 cases of COVID-19, but this has risen every week since, according to BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) data.

Last week, the BCCDC reported 74 cases in Richmond and 57 were detected the week prior.

High daily case counts continue to persist across the province as well – 785 cases were reported on Wednesday (Sept. 1) with 199 in hospital and 112 in the ICU. (Of the 785 cases, 110 are in Vancouver Coastal Health, which Richmond is part of.)

But the Ministry of Health reported that 80 per cent of those who end up in hospital aren’t fully vaccinated.

Currently, 77.7 per cent of B.C. residents, aged 12 and older, are fully vaccinated.

In Richmond, however, almost every neighbourhood has met or exceeded the provincial average with a high of 84 per cent fully vaccinated in Steveston.

And 87 per cent of Richmondites have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
