An accident near Steveston Highway and Sidaway Road Friday night sent an unknown number of people to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and closed the roads to traffic.

Police are asking for witnesses to a car crash which shut down a section of Steveston Highway last week to come forward.

Richmond RCMP is asking the driver of a dark-coloured Hyundai Santa Fe to come forward with information about the incident, which happened Friday, Jan. 24 around 7:30 p.m.

“A dark-coloured Hyundai Sante Fe was driving eastbound on Steveston Highway towards the movie theatre immediately behind (a) GMC Yukon when the collision occurred,” said Sgt. Nigel Pronger with the Richmond RCMP.

“The driver pulled over to assist, but then departed before responding members were able to speak to him. Our investigators would like to speak to this witness.”

The Richmond News reported how police responded to a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Sidaway Road and Steveston Highway.

A white 2012 BMW and a black 2016 GMC Yukon were involved in the collision, each with two occupants — a driver and a passenger.

All four individuals were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and were discharged later that same evening, according to RCMP.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, and both speed and driver impairment are being considered, said RCMP, adding that the criminal collision investigation team (CCIT) is in charge of the investigation.

The CCIT team are seeking witnesses to the crash or events leading up to it.

If you have any information about the collision, contact Richmond RCMP CCIT at 604-278-1212 and quote file number 2020-2547.
