Photos: Flashback to a dark day for aviation in Richmond

In February, 1968, two people died after a Canadian Pacific Airlines passenger jet overran the runway at YVR and crashed into the passenger terminal.

February 7, 1968 was a dark day for the airline industry and for Vancouver International Airport.

There was poor visibility due to heavy fog as a Canadian Pacific Airlines flight arrived at YVR from Honolulu.

What caused the crash?

Reports from the day state that the flight overran the runway and crashed into the passenger terminal.

Two people were killed — 33-year-old flight attendant Martinus Verhoef, of West Vancouver, and 44-year-old airport employee Elmer Nedcalf, of Richmond.

Sixty passengers and crew members survived the crash, which was blamed on the poor conditions.

Photographer Dave Holt captured much of the horrific aftermath on camera.
