Photos: Who remembers the Brighouse Cafe in Richmond?

The cafe on No. 3 Road, near Granville Avenue, appeared to have shifted location slightly over the years and appealed to different clientele

It’s understood to the date back to before the Second World War and survived – in several guises – through to the new century.

The original Brighouse Cafe was located across No.3 Road from the “Municipal Hall” close to Granville Avenue.

Back then it purported to sell “cigarettes and tobacco, candies and soft drinks,” with an invitation to sample “orange crush” on its side wall.

Over the decades, its location appears to have shifted slightly around that area of No. 3 Road and was reported to be a “modest” Chinese restaurant by 1965.

By the ‘80s, it seems to be set further back off No. 3 Road in what was then called “Richmond Plaza” and was set behind a discount clothing store called MarcDowns, and Scotiabank.
