Out and About: 75 tons of herring sold to raise money for kids with cancer

The herring sale in Steveston has raised almost $1 million since it began more than a decade ago.

The 13th annual herring sale on Saturday, Jan. 13, was a huge success.

The event was organized by Fishermen Helping Kids with Cancer, and was located at the Steveston Harbour Authority on Trites Road.

When I was there, a steady stream of vehicles were quickly and efficiently loaded with their orders of herring.

An amazing 75 tons of herring is expected to be sold — double the amount from last year.

Each bag of herring weighed about 20 pounds and cost a bargain price of $20.

Tickets were only sold online, with pickup times slotted every half hour from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

All proceeds will go to support kids being treated for cancer at BC Children's Hospital.

The money buys items to make their stay more comfortable, including special food at Christmas, maintaining the video game, book and movie libraries and providing welcome kits for newly diagnosed patients.

The herring sale has raised almost $1 million since 2011.

The event has great support from the Richmond community with excellent organization and hard work from volunteers.

By Thursday morning, two days before the sale, almost all pickup times were sold out!
