Operation Red Nose kicked off 2011 campaign in Delta-Richmond

Operation Red Nose Delta-Richmond kicked off its 2011 campaign last weekend by driving more than 200 people home safely from holiday festivities.

Operation Red Nose Delta-Richmond kicked off its 2011 campaign last weekend by driving more than 200 people home safely from holiday festivities.

"These last two years we have seen a large spike in the number of people using the service," said Carlene Lewall, co-ordinator of Operation Red Nose Delta-Richmond. "We are pleased that people are acting more responsibly by choosing Operation Red Nose."

Motorists in Delta and Richmond, along with 11 other areas in B.C., can count on the services of Operation Red Nose to get themselves and their vehicles home safely after a night of celebrations.

On the first weekend of the season, 60 volunteers covered more than 2,500 kilometres to pick up and deliver party-goers, which also means the service needs more volunteers, according to Lewall.

"We are very short on volunteers, especially this Saturday, Dec. 3 and New Year's Eve."

Operation Red Nose is available between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m., Dec. 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17 and 31.

To arrange a ride, call 604-943-0460, 30 to 45 minutes in advance of desired pick up time, and 60 minutes in advance after midnight.

The service is free, but donations are appreciated. All proceeds benefit the Delta Sport Development Centre.
