An off-duty Mountie thwarted two thieves as they tried to escape after allegedly robbing a Burnaby restaurant.
Const. Calvin Leung, a Richmond Mountie, was on his day off and was driving in Burnaby when he spotted two men run across busy Kingsway, dodging oncoming cars, towards the Metrotown parking lot.
I was going to roll down my window and have a word with them but then I saw them strip off their top layer of clothes, said Leung in a statement released by Burnaby RCMP.
I thought something was up so I followed them.
Leung followed the two men onto a bus, told the driver to wait for police, then called 911.
The two men were arrested by Burnaby constables. At the time of the arrest, one man had a large hunting knife in his possession.
The subsequent investigation linked the two men to the robbery of a local restaurant that occurred just moments before.
George Mack Nicholson and James Douglas Holden, both of Vancouver, are facing robbery charges.
