During the 2010 Olympic Winter Games the Water Garden at City Hall was filled with cranberries from the local harvest. Brian Phillips – City of Richmond Archives photograph 1_3824.

Do you remember when the water feature on the south side of Richmond City Hall was full of cranberries?

The red berries that are symbolic of Richmond farming were supposed to be in the shape of a Maple Leaf – cordoned off and floating – in the Fraser River during the 2010 Olympics.

But, because of the unusually warm weather and spring runoff, the current in the river was too strong.

So, as a Plan B, they were dumped into the city hall water feature.

Another 13 million cranberries were in Brighouse Park, displayed in the shape of the Olympic rings.

The city’s initiative during the 2010 Olympics, as an official venue city, was to “Paint the Town Red.”

This photo is part of an exhibition looking back at the 2010 Olympics and Richmond’s part in it, displayed at the Richmond Cultural Centre and Library.
