Local artists sought for Richmond’s sidewalk mural project.

In the upcoming months, you might find a surprise underneath your feet when you walk around Richmond in the rain.

Richmond is calling for local artists to submit designs for the city’s new Neighbourhood Rain Murals project.

Eight neighbourhoods across the city will have artworks painted on the sidewalks around local community centres, but will only appear when they get wet as part of the project.

The neighbourhoods involved in the program are Cambie/East Richmond, City Centre, Hamilton, Sea Island, South Arm, Steveston, Thompson, and West Richmond.

Artists of all ages can submit written concepts and original drawings for the project.

Submissions are required to highlight the uniqueness of each neighbourhood, including the flora of the area, a specific urban design element, or other intangible characteristics.

Richmond’s Mural Artist Roster members will review the submissions and choose up to six designs per neighbourhood.

“The designs will be made into stencils and installed on neighbourhood sidewalks and public plazas using eco-friendly hydrophobic paint. The artworks will be invisible when dry, but will appear when wet.” read the release.

The City of Richmond launched the program during the pandemic for artists to share their talents and connect with people in public spaces.

A map with all the rain murals will be uploaded to the city’s website in late Spring.

Deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. on April 24, 2022 at LetsTalkRichmond.ca
