Delta firefighters are still investigating the cause of a fire at Western Rubber Products Ltd. on Annacis Island Sunday night.
Delta fire received several 911 calls just after 6 p.m. of thick, black clouds of smoke coming from the tire recycling plant.
Deputy chief Brad Wilson said firefighters arrived quickly on scene and due to the nature of the fire and products involved, a second alarm was initiated.
“Our crews did a fantastic job of keeping the fire out of the main structure,” said Wilson. “The fire started, we believe in a piece of equipment within one of the hoppers on the outside of the building. The plant was operational at the time of the fire.”
Wilson said firefighters attacked the blaze from the ground and from one of their aerial units keeping the blaze from spreading further into the roof of the building.
“It’s rubber products, so they smoke a lot when they burn,” said Wilson. “It was a good thing that they called for a second alarm early. We wanted to protect the main plant, which we did.”
At the peak of the blaze, 33 firefighters were on scene.
Delta cleared the scene just after 6 a.m. Monday morning. A fire prevention officer was on scene Monday trying to determine the exact cause.
No injuries were reported.
