A person has been convicted for the second time in three months for illegally operating as a ride-hailing driver in Richmond.
The driver has been given one-year probation with the condition they can’t operate a commercial passenger vehicle unless licenced by the province. If they fail to comply with the probation order, it could result in criminal charges, according to the Richmond RCMP.
The conviction came down on June 9.
The driver was caught in a ride-hailing sting held by the RCMP in May 2024.
In March, the driver was also convicted for operating without a licence, having the wrong driver’s licence class and for failure to display a certificate. This resulted from being caught in December 2023.
“It’s rare for us to see someone enter traffic court and leave on probation with the jeopardy of a Criminal Code of Canada charge should they re-offend,” said Const. Frank Tarape with the Richmond RCMP Road Safety Unit.
“With the seriousness of this conviction, we hope we don’t see this driver operating illegally on the road again. We want the public to be aware of the inherent risks of using these unlicensed apps and to only use services that are approved to operate in the Province of British Columbia.”
