Steveston Harbour was one of several similar facilities across B.C. to get a $7.9 million funding boost from the federal government last week.

Randy Kamp, parliamentary secretary to Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced Friday in Steveston that the government will invest in the repair and maintenance of small craft harbours in B.C.

"Our government is committed to ensuring a healthy future for British Columbia's commercial fishery and the communities that depend on this important industry," said Kamp.

"We are pleased to fund the repair and maintenance work that will ensure harbours are open, safe and in good repair for the fish harvesters who rely on them."

This year, Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program will undertake necessary dredging, repair and maintenance projects at 16 core B.C. commercial fishing harbours, including Steveston.

Minor repair and maintenance projects will also be carried out at harbours throughout the province.

"The projects announced today will benefit commercial fishers and their communities for years to come," added Kamp.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada undertakes these projects in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate facilities for local users.

Projects that will be funded under the program in Steveston include: Floating wharf projects; stormwater management projects and basin dredging.
