Taking a cue from Johnny Cash, Esther Ho plans to ‘walk the line’ — Canada Line, that is, from the Minoru Centre for Active Living to Olympic Village in Vancouver.

And she hope other Richmondites will join her on Saturday to help raise money for four charities, The Wellness Lifestyle Charity Walk will benefit Dare BC Society, the Community Mental Wellness Association of Canada, Developmental Disability Association and Canadian Health Awareness Society.

She chose the route so anyone could do it, because if they can’t they can always just hop on a train and head back home.

Ho plans a large fundraiser every year. Her previous fundraisers have been solo ventures – like running across the Sahara – but, this year, she wanted something more social.

“This time, I would like to share the happiness with Richmond residents,” she said.

Ho has organized two events. The Supporter group will walk four times around the Minoru track, and each lap will represent one of the charities being supported. The Challenger group will also walk four times around the track and then set off on the half-marathon, walking 20.1 kilometres to Olympic Village.

The walkathon leaves from the Minoru Centre for Active Living at 8 a.m. on July 6. The registration fee is $35 for adults, $20 for children aged four to 12 and $100 for a family of two adults and two children.
Those who haven’t pre-registered can register the day of the event by arriving at 7:30 a.m. There will be refreshments on the half-marathon.

Ho’s goal is to raise between $20,000 to $40,000, and the fundraising will continue after Saturday’s event.
