A long-time local dentist and father of a Richmond RCMP officer killed in the line of duty has passed away.

Dr. Chris Ng was found at his Saltspring Island retirement home on June 17. It is believed he suffered injuries while clearing trees on the property a few weeks prior. He was 75.

His son, Const. Jimmy Ng, was killed when his cruiser was broadsided in 2002 by another car running a red light in Richmond. The driver was sentenced to 18 months in jail for criminal negligence causing death and an additional six months for leaving the scene of an accident.

Staff Sgt. Major John Buis, a watch commander at the Richmond RCMP detachment when Const. Ng died, got to know Chris Ng in the years following his son’s death.

Buis is part of a group that puts together an annual memorial at the RCMP’s training depot in Regina, Sask. and would meet with Ng each September.

“He and his wife (Therese) were mainstays at that ceremony,” Buis said. “We met each year for the past five years, except one, when his wife passed away from cancer in 2013.”

Last year, Ng laid a wreath at the memorial on behalf of all the families who had lost a member of their family while serving in the RCMP.

Ng and his wife ran their dental practice in Richmond for 40 years before retiring to Salt Spring Island. The two were also involved in many missionary endeavors in Asia and Africa over the years.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on July 23, 2016 at Our Lady Of Grace Church, 135 Drake Road on Salt Spring Island.
