Two distinguished development projects have earned prestigious accolades as winners of the City of Richmond’s fourth Lulu Urban Design Awards.
The Lulu Awards, presented by Mayor Malcolm Brodie, at Monday’s council meeting, celebrate and inspire excellence in urban design.
“Great urban design is a hallmark of livable communities and adds to the vibrancy and appeal of a city,” said Brodie. “The Lulu Awards are dedicated to encouraging and celebrating urban design that is visionary and attractive while also being functional and sustainable.”
The 2017 Lulu Award in the category of Public and Institutional Building urban design goes to Quintet — City Centre Community Centre and Trinity Western University, developed by UEM Sunrise (Canada) Development Ltd., designed by W.T. Leung Architects Inc. and landscape designed by Durante Kreuk Ltd.
The four-storey building accommodates community centre and university space and is part of a larger highrise residential and commercial mixed-use project. The design integrates the interior spaces with the street and the vertical visual connection with upper level open space.
The 2017 Lulu Award in the category of Public and Institutional Open Space urban design is awarded to Terra Nova Play Experience. Designed by Hapa Collaborative and Lynne Werker Architect, the play equipment is unique; individual elements interact with their context. The design showcases the agricultural past in the city and allows kids to connect to nature in the city.
