The provincial government has announced Flatiron Constructors Canada Limited and Urban Systems Ltd will build the new five-lane Steveston Interchange

A team has been chosen to design and build the new five-lane Steveston interchange, with a project completion date of 2025.

The province announced earlier this week that Flatiron Constructors Canada Limited and Urban Systems Ltd. will build the new five-lane interchange.

Kelly Greene, MLA for Richmond-Steveston, called the interchange improvements “a great step forward” ahead of the George Massey Tunnel replacement.

“The replacement of the Steveston Interchange will help keep Richmond connected and make it easier for people to get to school, work, errands and activities,” she said in a statement.

The new interchange will replace the existing two-lane overpass at Steveston Highway and Highway 99 with a five-lane structure of two eastbound lanes and three westbound lanes, including a left turn lane.

“Our government is moving ahead on the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel, and we are starting by addressing one of the worst bottlenecks in the area – the Steveston Interchange,” said Rob Fleming, Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure, in a statement.

The new interchange will also improve access to transit stops and pedestrian and cycling connections across Highway 99.

A new bus-only on-ramp will be created from Bridgeport Road onto Highway 99 southbound.

Meanwhile, new multi-use pathway connections will be created from the Oak Street Bridge into Richmond’s cycling and pedestrian network.

Transit priority lanes will also be added along Highway 99 in Delta in both directions, while Highway 17A lanes will be widened and reconfigured to support eastbound bus/HOV priority.

Improvements will also be made to the bicycle shuttle pull-out on Highway 17A, while new ramp crossings and a new shelter will also be added.

The next step in the interchange project is to finalize an agreement with the preferred proponent.

Construction is slated to begin later this year.
