The City of Richmond looks set to support the continuation of the carbon tax but it wouldnt mind a slice of the action to fund its own green initiatives.
City council this week, after being asked for its opinion by the province, supported the carbon tax as an ongoing means of reducing greenhouse gas emission (GHGs).
However, in its written submissions to B.C.s finance minister and the premier, the city will ask that a portion of the carbon tax revenues be directed to Richmond for it to establish more local actions resulting in the reduction of GHGs.
The province has sought the views of its cities as part of its review into the carbon tax, which gets added every year to the cost of gasoline, diesel and natural gas.
The carbon tax was designed to be revenue neutral, with revenues returned to taxpayers in the shape of other tax cuts, such as personal income tax.
Richmond is also asking the province to carry out more detailed studies into the decision-making behind the tax rate and evaluate more the impact of the tax since its inception in 2008.
