Thousands of people in Richmond City Centre were still without power at around 11 a.m. on Friday, after an early morning, single-vehicle accident on Garden City Road.

It's understood a hydro pole was struck by a vehicle near the gas station at Garden City and Lansdowne roads just after 6 a.m.

It's not yet clear how the accident happened, but it meant rush hour motorists having to take the long way around to get to work, after the section of Garden City Road was closed to traffic.

No word either on whether the driver in question was injured in the smash.

Although some customers in the area - including the Richmond News - had its power restored fairly quickly, more than 1,700 clients may have to wait until 5 p.m. to have electricity again.
