Photos: Attendants watch for debris on Richmond trains

Did you see attendants at the front of Canada Line trains on Wednesday?

During yesterday’s “snow event,” Canada Line passengers might have noticed attendants at the front of the train as they travelled in Richmond.

They were there keeping an eye out to make sure there was no debris on the tracks.

While normally there are sensors along the tracks – an “intrusion detection system” - to warn of any potential hazards, during snow events, they are turned off as they can get easily triggered with the falling snow.

So, instead, attendants place themselves at the head of Canada Line and SkyTrain trains – usually reserved for young kids who enjoy watching the scenery – and watch for any possible hazards.

Should they spot anything, they can trigger the train’s brakes.

“The trains continue to operate automatically, but at slower than usual speeds,” explained TransLink in a Buzzer post. “SkyTrain Attendants can safely stop and manually operate the trains if required, but their primary role onboard the trains is to monitor the tracks.”
