31 Minoru Park trees axed to the ground

Poplar trees were deemed unhealthy on site where city is relocating tennis courts

31 poplar trees in Minoru Park were given the old chainsaw in October, 2014. The city stated the trees were in poor condition. They were next to a construction site.

The City of Richmond is in the midst of cutting down 31 tall, mostly poplar, trees in Minoru Park along Gilbert Road.

The trees will be replaced on a one-to-one ratio, including 19 oak and birch trees in the same are and 12 "other trees" elsewhere, according to city spokesperson Ted Townsend, who said the poplar trees were in poor condition and in danger of toppling.

He said the new oak and birch trees will grow broader canopies and won't face the same health issues common in poplar trees found in Richmond.

Due to renovations to the sports fields the park lost even more trees earlier this year when the city bulldozed them to make way for relocated tennis courts.

The park is having artificial turf installed to accommodate year-round sports activities and save maintenance costs. The turfs are part of changes made to accommodate a new Minoru aquatics and seniors complex.
