Richmond residents are used to seeing temporary, dedicated cooling centres open when a heat wave is expected.
However, the weekend's hot temperatures did not meet the criteria to trigger this.
City of Richmond spokesperson Clay Adams said the city follows a heat and poor air quality emergency operations plan when the BC Heat Alert and Response System (BC HARS) is activated to protect the public during extreme heat.
A heat warning is issued when the forecast shows daytime highs of 29 C or more for two consecutive days, along with a nighttime low of 16 C or higher, explained Adams.
An extreme health emergency is declared when those high temperatures are expected to continue for three or more days in a row.
According to Weatherhood, East Richmond is expected to be the hottest neighbourhood in Richmond, with a temperature of 32 C for Wednesday.
Meanwhile, temperatures in Richmond City Centre and Steveston are anticipated to stay within the 16 C and 28 C range until Thursday.
"While the region is expecting warm temperatures, keep in mind that because hot weather is expected in the Fraser Valley and further, that does not mean those temperature thresholds are reached in Richmond," said Adams.
For now, the city is reminding people there are several ways to stay cool during the summer heat.
Indoor spaces such as Cambie and South Arm community centres, Minoru Centre for Active Living, as well as all four Richmond public libraries, Brighouse Cultural Centre and the Richmond Art Gallery and Museum, are open to the public during regular hours.
There are also outdoor cooling options, including spray parks and pools, which can be found on the city website.
"Of course, we encourage everyone to be careful and do what they can to avoid the negative impacts of high temperatures. Please check in on friends, neighbours and loved ones to make sure they are not in distress."
