Richmond's Gateway Theatre is holding its first-ever dog audition for an upcoming musical.
The theatre is preparing for its holiday production of Annie and is looking for a dog living in the Lower Mainland to play the role of Annie's puppy, Sandy.
If chosen, rehearsals will begin on Thursday, Nov. 6. Performances will run from Dec. 11 to Jan. 3, 2026.
Gateway Theatre is looking for a dog that is:
- friendly/non-aggressive;
- comfortable around children and crowds of people;
- doesn’t startle easily or bark repeatedly;
- comfortable with loud noises/music; and,
- can follow basic commands such as sit, stay, follow, lie down, and come.
Dogs are also welcome to show off fun tricks or skills during the audition.
Families must submit an application email with the subject line “Dog Audition Request – Annie” to Aldana Padron, office and artistic coordinator at Gateway Theatre, at [email protected].
The email should include a brief introduction with the following details:
- Your name
- Their name
- Dog’s temperament: Are they friendly? Calm? Serious?
- Any extreme sensitivities or triggers? Such as bright lights or loud sounds?
- Any accessibility requests you may have
- One or two of the best photos of your dog
Deadline for applications is Tuesday, July 22 at 11:59 p.m.
Successful candidates will be contacted for the official audition on Saturday, Aug. 9 at Gateway Theatre.
