1. Garlic Festival: Sunday, Aug. 20:
The Sharing Farm’s annual Garlic Festival is on Sunday, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
This year there are more types of garlic than ever before. Look for Russian Red: a rich, musky garlic, very hot when eaten raw; Music: an easy-to-peel, white-skinned garlic with just a blush of pink; and Purple Italian Softneck: a braidable softneck garlic with a milder flavour.
Also, Georgian Fire: a hot garlic with a classic porcelain sheen; Ukrainian: a light but snappy garlic that tastes great raw; and Persian Star: an eye-catching garlic with streaking, mottled stripes from fuscia to deep purple.
There will also be an expanded farmer’s market featuring fresh produce, vegan cheese, gourmet chocolates and baked goods. Check out MetroVanGarlicfest.ca or simply head to Terra Nova Park.
