Richmond student raises $5K for hospital with solo art exhibition

Around 200 people attended the student’s first solo exhibition

A Richmond secondary student recently raised $5,000 for Richmond Hospital Foundation through her art exhibition.

Melody Wu, 17, saw around 200 guests attending her first solo art exhibition held at Richmond Cultural Centre on Aug. 20.

The Grade 11 student was inspired to hold the fundraiser after seeing donated artwork on the walls of Richmond Hospital and learning of its need for funds.

“Apart from hoping the exhibition would allow people to notice the beauty in life, I would also like to encourage people to contribute to our community in any way they can,” said Wu, who organized the event all by herself.

Wu showcased more than 20 pieces of her work depicting natural landscapes, cultural harmony and slices of daily life in mediums including watercolours, sketches and oil paintings.

She started painting more than eight years ago and recently received the Silver Key from the prestigious Scholastic Art & Writing Awards, a North American competition for young artists and writers.
