Richmond residents can now borrow original art pieces from the Richmond Art Gallery as part of a library program at the end of the month.

Original artworks on display at the art gallery and the Richmond Public Library can be borrowed on a short-term loan and have a professional install them for free.

This borrowing program will be available during the gallery's exhibition titled "A Small But Comfy House, and Maybe a Dog" from April 22 to June 11.

People borrowing the artworks must be Richmond residents and they can only loan artworks for 60 days.

The borrowed artworks can only be hung in clean and dry areas of the home, be installed and taken down by a gallery technician and cannot be moved once installed.

Any loss or damage to the artwork is the borrower's responsibility, and a copy of their credit card and driver's license will need to be provided.

Su-Ying Lee, the curator of Richmond Art Gallery's latest exhibition, said the artwork loan program was inspired by a similar library program she experienced while she was a youth.

“When I was a child, the library was foundational to my family’s well-being," said Lee, adding it was a space for relaxation and exploration.

"I remember coming upon a shelf of artworks, what I now understand to be reproductions of drawings and paintings laminated onto plaques, and asking my mother what they were for. She said we were allowed to take them home. Surprised, excited and shy, I picked out a drawing of a robin."

"In considering the relationship between the art gallery and the library, I described the art-lending program of my childhood."
