Your Voice: What is it about you that makes you Canadian?

From top left, clockwise:

Paul Arden, retied handyman:

I love Canada, I love English Bay. I guess because I’m polite and nice. You know, typical politeness; I always say ‘sorry,’ even if someone else steps on my foot. I just love Canada; we have democracy; we have economic opportunity. Oh, and I watch CBC!

Amanda Bair, pastry chef:

Recycling. I would like to encourage people to do recycling, because it’s good for the environment. That is very important to me in life. In my free time I like to walk by the river. I think that’s Canadian. Canadians care about their free time. In my hometown (in Taiwan) they always work, even on weekends.

Patricia Grochowski, retired teacher:

Because I liken myself to a Heinz 57 genetically; I think that speaks to the multiculturalism of Canada. I have relatives from vast parts of Europe... and two Aboriginal bands. And the fact that I really, really do want world peace. Why can’t we get along? Why can’t we think of someone else first?

Conrad Au, federal worker:

I still watch the Canucks, even though they suck. I think, for me, being Canadian means being open to the world. Back to the Canucks, we just drafted Jett Woo; that’s kind of different. I think us being open to the world is coming to fruition.

Rachel Wong, student:

I love learning about different cultures. Recently, I’ve been learning about First Nations history. I just appreciate the diversity in Canada; we can interact with so many different people from different places. Oh, and I say ‘thank you’ to people when I get off the bus. Canadians are polite!
