Your Voice: Do you approve or disapprove of the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion? June 7, 2018

Clockwise, from top left:

Justin Mackey, student:

I’m sort of impartial. I know the federal government is pushing it and our B.C. government is sort of against it. They want to make sure an oil spill can’t happen. But stuff like that, sometimes it can’t be prevented. Financially it would be good for us and ease things with Alberta.

Eduardo Parra, visual artist:

My intuition is from the environment, it’s bad but in terms of jobs and the economy it could help. It’s inbetween but I’ll say I’m more of a ‘no’ because of the environment. In the long run I wouldn’t support it right away. There are a lot of issues we don’t see; if there’s a leak, who is going to pay for it?

Margot Owen, retired interior designer:

No. Primarily my first concern is environmental issues; I don’t believe they’ve addressed those. They have not explained, in any form, that should there be an accident of any form they cannot clean it up. And it would last 100 years. They aren’t looking at our grandchildren and that upsets me.

Alex Yu, student:

If they say they are ready and can prove the pipeline will not pollute the ocean or the environment then I think it’s OK. To be honest, if the government has more money they can make it better for everyone to live in this area. So, if they say it’s secure to use, then go ahead.

Anne Sander, teacher:

No. I really worry about our coastline and the inadequecy of the elements to protect against a potential spill. And it’s not even a potential spill because it will happen. I don’t think there’s any preparation. I am not convinced (of the Oceans Protection Plan). We need to look at other energy sources.
