There is sure to be plenty of action on the waters off Garry Point Park next Sunday (June 26) as the 71st annual Bullhead Derby gets underway.

It’s a time-honoured tradition that when the annual Bullhead Derby rolls around in June, you had better be getting ready for the Steveston Salmon Festival on July 1.

This year’s derby, the 29th installment, will take place Sunday, June 24 at 9 a.m. at Garry Point Park.

Organized by the Steveston Community Society and hosted by the Golden Rods and Reels Society, a small, local group of recreational fishers, the derby has two categories: kids (age 12 and under) and seniors (age 65 and older).

“Pack your fishing gear and a picnic and bring your family for a fun day of fishing. Who will catch the “big one”? We will soon find out!” notes the society.

Of course, everyone is welcome to come and cheer on the fishers.

While registration starts at 9 a.m. the derby opens at 10 a.m. and runs until noon.

Prizes from Pajo’s, White Spot and Pacific Net and Twine will be awarded as soon as the results are tabulated.

Every participant will receive a souvenir ribbon.
