A portion of a walkway to the CBC transmission tower area in Steveston is being taken apart this month.

Construction is being done on the walkway leading to the CBC/Radio-Canada transmission tower area, near Williams road and West Dyke Trail, until April 22.

There will be land and sea work to take apart 355-metres of the catwalk as it is no longer needed, according to Leon Mar, spokesperson for CBC/Radio-Canada.

“A barge-mounted crane will take down the parts of the boardwalk accessible by water and remove the debris; the rest will be done on land and include some vehicular traffic,” said Mar.

Mar told the Richmond News that the radio towers are not being removed at this time, despite the sign reading that two towers would be removed.

Only the wooden boardwalk, the foundations for the two old towers and several pilings will be removed.

"The rest of the infrastructure is staying, including two radio towers and the building/fence adjacent to the dike," he said.

In 2018, two towers were decommissioned and dismantled by crew while two new transmitters were installed in their place.

The West Dyke Trail will still be accessible to the public during the removal process with flaggers on site.

Mar confirmed that the CBC AM service at the site will not be shut down.
