Richmond residents are invited to connect with their community during B.C. Seniors Week, which runs June 6 – 10, through a series of fun, entertaining and educational activities that will help show persons 55 years and older how to connect with new people.

“Richmond is a nurturing, connected city that promotes healthy and active aging,” said Mayor Malcolm Brodie. “We are proud to offer programs and events that foster a sense of belonging and community pride while engaging and inspiring our citizens to continue to enhance Richmond’s livability.”

Seniors province-wide are once again being publicly acknowledged for their vibrancy and the pivotal role they play in society during B.C. Seniors Week. To celebrate locally, the City of Richmond and its partners are offering more than 18 free or low-cost events, activities and programs over the five days.

A free opening ceremony will kick off the week on Monday, June 6 at 1:30 p.m. at Minoru Place Activity Centre with a country fair-inspired social, featuring live music by the Soda Crackers, dancing and strawberry shortcake.

Other activities to enjoy throughout the week include Art in the Park at Thompson Community Centre, a Connect with Social Media workshop at the Richmond Media Lab, a Wellness Showcase at the East Richmond Community Hall, dance classes, free tours and Our Community Fair at City Centre Community Centre.

There will also an introduction to the Music Works pilot project being offered to isolated, frail and at risk seniors at West Richmond Community Centre.

The week will wrap up on Friday, June 10 with a dance variety class and seniors luncheon at Hamilton Community Centre.

Pre-registration is required for most activities as space is limited. Register online at Richmond.ca/register, by calling 604-276-4300 Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., or in person at any City of Richmond community facility.
