There were dozens of vendors at the first ever seniors expo in Richmond

Back for the second year running this weekend is the Richmond and Delta chapter of CARP’s annual Seniors Health And Wellness Expo (SHARE) event.

Festivities kick off at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 25 on the grounds of South Arm United Church at No. 3 Road and Steveston Highway, where CARP will “take over” the facilities for the day.

“This event has two purposes,” explained Geoff Cowman, CARP’s chapter and project chair.

“The primary one is to provide information to seniors — in one place, at one time, at no cost or obligation whatsoever – that they would not normally look for or even know where to find.”

Cowman said more than 70 exhibitors will be on hand to provide information and assistance on important issues such as: healthcare; emergency preparedness; nutrition; de-cluttering your home; renovating your home for ageing in place more graciously; and obtaining good legal advice.

Government agencies, non-profit groups and businesses specializing in working with seniors will all be on hand to answer your questions.

“We also want to increase the awareness of what CARP does for the community,” added Cowman.

“And by partnering up with Dignity Memorial, Equity Lifestyle Properties, HearingLife Canada and Iris Optical, then teaming up with local businesses such as Verve Seniors Living and the Senior Synergy business networking group and building our strategic plan each year, we are able to develop an increased ability to advocate for change for all seniors.”

There will be live entertainment all day from the local band Oxygen, playing hits from the 50s, 60s and 70s; lots of food and drinks from M & M Meats and Pizza Garden, great seminars (Crime Stoppers, RCMP, Cannimed and the Better Business Bureau, to name some) throughout the day.

And with over $3,000 in door prizes to be given away before the event closes at 4 p.m., you could go home with much more than the information you came to get.

Event organizers are still looking for volunteers to help on Saturday with registration booth work, traffic control, food preparation and roving “ambassadors.”

Anyone willing and able to help should contact Cowman by calling 604-352-5714 or emailing [email protected].

Admission to the expo is free, as is parking.
