Toy room volunteers at the Richmond Christmas Fund help deliver happiness to families in need during the holiday season.

Everyone, regardless of income, deserves to share in the holiday spirit, so says the guiding principle behind the Richmond Christmas Fund.

Operated by Richmond Cares, Richmond Gives (RCRG), the Christmas Fund provides assistance to low-income individuals and families who lack the financial means to celebrate the holidays.

Those who register with the program receive grocery vouchers, up to a maximum of four per household and families with children can also select toys, books and sports equipment from the fund’s toy room.

Registration for people or families who qualify begins Nov. 26, which is one of four, separate registration days.

“The Christmas Fund is special because it’s supported almost entirely by the community,” said Ed Gavsie, president and CEO of RCRG.

“To deliver the program, we rely on the generosity of hundreds of donors and volunteers. Year after year, they step up to help their neighbours in need.”

In 2016, Christmas Fund registration will take place over four consecutive Saturdays, beginning Nov. 26 and concluding Dec. 17.

On those days, the fund will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. As in past years, registration will be held at the Richmond Caring Place, 7000 Minoru Blvd.

To receive help from the Christmas Fund, individuals must provide proof that they live in Richmond and are currently enrolled in a government income assistance program.

They must also bring CareCards for all family members being registered. A complete list of eligibility criteria and required documentation is available online at rcrg.org.
