Richmond Fire-Rescue has launched a new Smoke Detector Recycling Program as part of this year’s Fire Prevention Week campaign, which runs Oct. 9 to 16.
“You can now drop off all of your used or expired smoke alarms to any of the seven Richmond Fire Halls,” said Richmond Fire-Rescue’s community relations officer, Brian MacLeod.
“We strive to enhance the city’s livability through service excellence and are pleased to offer this new public safety initiative to our community.”
The new program supports this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Don’t Wait - Check the Date! Replace Smoke Alarms Every 10 Years,” aimed at educating the public about the critical importance of knowing how old their smoke alarms are and replacing them when expired.
Previously in Richmond, there were only two places to properly recycle your smoke alarms; local London Drugs or Regional Recycling. Richmond Fire-Rescue wants to make it easier for you by providing more locations to appropriately dispose of these expired items.
The smoke detectors are then taken to Regional Recycling and properly disposed of through the Recycling Council of British Columbia’s stewardship program.
