It’s been slow-moving, but plans continue to develop for the new Steveston Community Centre and library branch.

At Monday’s general purposes committee meeting, Elizabeth Ayers, director of recreation and sports services, provided an update of the project outline which emerged from a draft and its feedback. Included in the outline were proposed facility sizes including a 12,400 square foot library space, which is more than three times the size of the current 4,000 square foot space.

Community centre space was also boosted from 33,400 square feet to 47,900 in the proposal, including gym space that is more than double the size of current facilities.

“The proposed program…responds to the Steveston Community Society’s desire for a larger gymnasium, kitchen and storages, as well as the addition of a food server,” said a city staff report. “It meets both current and future population growth, and accommodates programs and services for the local community, as well as large-scale regional special events and tournaments.”

Included in the gym space would be room for karate, judo and kendo tournaments. The gym could also be divided into four program spaces.

In December 2016, the city highlighted the replacement of the Steveston Community Centre as a priority project for 2016-2026.

A final report with concept options and costs are expected by the fall. City staff are now working to identify and evaluate site options for the facility.
