Pre-turkey, free 5K Parkrun in Richmond

If you’re looking forward to getting stuck into a big turkey dinner next Thanksgiving, but not the bulging waistline that results, then an event next weekend might be just the ticket.

If you’re looking forward to getting stuck into a big turkey dinner next Thanksgiving, but not the bulging waistline that results, then an event next weekend might be just the ticket.

The Richmond Olympic Parkrun is hosting its 100th free, weekly 5K event next Saturday, Oct. 6 along the Middle Arm Dyke Trail.

Starting at 9 a.m., the run – which can also be jogged or walked, and with your kids and pets – sets off from near the giant, silver Water Drop statue on the dyke, close to Cambie Road.

The sign-posted route meanders its way a short distance past the Olympic Oval before looping back to where it started.

“We average about 50-60 runners, but you can also walk, jog, bring your kids and your pets, and some people do,” said Becky Maybury, event director.

“It would be great to get about 80 to 90 and fabulous if we hit the 100-mark, given this is our 100th event.

“We’re also going to have a free raffle beforehand for a pair of Saucony runners and there will be a few other prizes, as well.”

Maybury said it’s best to show up at around 8:45 a.m. for a good stretch and so they can assess the numbers.

There’s no need to pre-register, unless you want to be officially timed, in which case, go online to ParkRun.ca/register to get a barcode, which can be scanned at the event.

“We will also stay until the last person is finished,” added Maybury.

“We also have a tail-walker, so you never finish last.”

Thousands of similar, free parkruns take place every week around the world.
