Party on for next year's OktoberfeSteveston

Last week's inaugural street-style German-themed event could be an annual fixture in the village

The first ever OktoberfeSteveston was a resounding success, according to organizers, with plans in the works to make the street party an annual event.

One of the event’s founders, Davood Khatami, estimated more than 2,000 people took part in OktoberfeSteveston in the village on Saturday during its 11 hours.

Khatami believes the German-style, outdoor party attracted about 1,500 people to the street section of the event, where DJs, a barbecue, kids crafts and a Mercedes-Benz car show filled a closed-off portion of No. 1 Road at Moncton Street.

Another 700 or so were estimated to have partaken of the German beer garden a few yards away at Steveston Seafood House.

“It was fantastic. I was hoping it would be, but you’re never quite sure,” said Khatami, owner of Davood’s Bistro, who organized the event along with fellow Steveston merchant Dominique Jarry.

“The response was awesome; a dream come true. The vibe was very positive and we got some great feedback, so we would love to do it again.”

Asked if he would do anything different, Khatami said that some people suggested making the event “bigger and better” next year.

“I think smaller is better, otherwise it just turns into another big Oktoberfest that you can get anywhere,” said Khatami.

“People loved the feel of being outside, dancing on the street with live DJs and having a beer in the garden, so I think we got it just right.”
