Out and About: Workers keep Richmond high and dry

Beavers had been busy pulling down trees, resulting in blockages.

Heavy duty equipment and careful expertise were at work recently on the West Dyke near Terra Nova.

A large mass of tree and plant debris had built up because of a combination of factors.

Our heavy snowfalls and rains washed down tree and plant debris that was blocking the flow of water through the drainage ditch.

And the expression “busy as a beaver” is also relevant.

A family of beavers has been diligently taking down trees and building dams.

The resulting buildup was too much to be removed by individual workers with shovels and rakes.

I watched as a work crew operating the necessary heavy equipment did an excellent job of cleaning out the blockage and restoring the normal passage of water.

Much of the water then makes its way from the Blundell pumping station out to the wetlands.

These workers are the unsung heroes of Richmond, keeping us high and dry.
