Dear Editor,
Speed limits needs to be reduced in Richmond or driver behaviour needs to be looked into.
I am a new mother and walk around Richmond with my baby in a carrier or stroller. There has been many times I have felt unsafe walking in Richmond where cars have not slowed down due to excessive speed, ran stop signs and have begun turning without scanning for pedestrians with the right of way.
Walking and public transportation are our main means of getting around Richmond. My baby loves being in the outdoors but I have genuine concern with the safety and protocols that are out there currently.
City council needs to review all roads and reduce speed limits to 30km/h around schools, daycares and neighbourhood centres permanently.
Council members need to realize drivers are not going 50km/h. Council needs to ask the province to add automated speed enforcement so that drivers will actually start slowing down because no other methods seem to be working.
There needs to be more studies around road safety and driver behaviour, especially when there are pedestrians and cyclists involved.
We seem to live in a car-centric world, and there must be some serious changes made for everyone's sake.
