It’s one of their biggest fundraisers of the year and it’s taking place at a local hair salon this Sunday.
In aid of Richmond-based Wigs for Kids BC, the fifth Hennessey Hairdo cut-a-thon at Hennessey Salon Richmond Centre usually pulls in around 100 adults and children.
The event on Jan. 15 — which is run every two years — raises thousands of dollars for seriously ill children through people making pledges to see someone having their hair cut.
The cut hair is also donated to the charity, which is then used to make free wigs for the children, most of whom are undergoing treatment, such as chemotherapy, for their illnesses which results in the loss of hair.
Bev Friesen, of Wigs for Kids BC, said, depending on how many people sign up, they are hoping to bring in up to $15,000 in donations.
“We only do this every second year so the people that want to take part have got a good chance to grow their hair back in,” said Friesen.
“Five that were here in 2013 are coming back; including young Noah Epting, who has been growing out his hair again.
“I don’t know that many boys that would do this once, let alone twice.”
Stylists at the salon donate their time and, according to Friesen, look forward to the event from a long way off.
“This is definitely one of our biggest events of the year; we get calls all the time about it and the stylists get very excited, as well,” she added.
For a minimum donation of $40 for women, $30 for men and kids, you can get a cut and style, with all proceeds going to Wigs for Kids BC.
“We encourage people to collect pledges before the cut-a-thon; if you have raised a minimum $40 in pledges, the cut is free,” she said.
