The Summer Reading Club is in full swing at all four Richmond Public Library branches. It’s free to join and is open to kids of all ages. More than 2,900 youth have signed up, but it’s not too late to join – registration is still open.

Kids receive a special reading record to keep track of their reading. Participants also receive a White Spot Pirate Pak coupon, weekly stickers, a chance to win book prizes and a medal for completing the club.

For more information, visit the library’s website at YourLibrary.ca, or call 604-231-6412. As part of Summer Reading Club each year, the library encourages children to let it know what they think of the books they are reading by writing reviews, and each week several reviews are chosen to be published in The Richmond News. Here are this week’s reviews:

Sunset Shimmer’s Time to Shine

By Perdita Finn

Reviewed by: Romina, age 8

A nice girl named Sunset Shimmer is happily trying to study the magic of friendship. She also has a magical booklet so she can write to her friend, Twilight Sparkle.

I like this book because it includes magic, friendship and teamwork. Also because it teaches you a lesson. The lesson was: don’t be selfish.

I give this book five stars.

Tonight on the Titanic

By Mary Pope Osborne

Reviewed by: Milanda, age 9

The Titanic was scraping against an iceberg. Then the Titanic started to sink. More than 1,500 people died and 705 people escaped in lifeboats. The Titanic completely sunk around 2:20 a.m.

I like this book because it talks about a very sad Titanic disaster. It is pretty strange because most people believed it was unsinkable. But when it hit an iceberg it started to sink. What I couldn’t believe is the Titanic took two hours to sink. Dr. Robert once discovered the undersea wreck of the Titanic.

I give this book five stars.
